Season 5 Overview
Diane’s debut in the fifth episode Serendipity after the departure of fan favourite Stephanie March as ADA Alexandra Cabot caused quite a storm in the fact Novak was a very different kind of ADA than Cabot was. One thing that was noted right from the jump is that Novak was a hands on kind of ADA, choosing to go to her crime scenes a la Marcia Clark, instead of relying on what her detectives told her. It was a trial by fire for Novak as her first case put her in confrontation mode with Stabler and Benson, but it seemed Stabler had more of an issue with Novak’s motivations than Benson. At the end of her first case, Novak goes to Arthur Branch asking to be transferred off of Sex Crimes. Branch declines, offering he’d been eyeing Casey for this job. After he initial introduction Diane settled in nicely with the cast, giving a much needed boost in the arm with her approach to Novak including her tomboyish pursuits like in Coerced where we saw Casey in a batting cage when Cragen came to discuss her hard-edge regarding the detectives under him. We see Novak beginning to realize the cost these kinds of personal crimes take on the victim plus we get to see Diane evolve through Casey’s journey. Shaken, Brotherhood, and Mean provide ample evidence of Novak’s prowess in the court room. Home provides really the first glimpse of Diane’s own personal humour coming through as she invades a judge’s poker game in order to get a warrant signed. Toward the end of the season is where Diane shone as Casey. In Sick, Lowdown, and Poison, Novak and Diane Neal shine as we see not only the passion Diane imbues Novak with, but also the deft ability to go head-to-head with such veterans as Marlo Thomas as Judge Mary Clarke who Casey temped with during her law school days, but particularly with character actor Tom Skerritt (Alien, Tears of the Sun, Picket Fences) as Judge Oliver Taft. When Novak confronts Taft who is on the stand we know Diane solidified her presence and position on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
